About
Life is good… but I want more!
I have a great family, a dream house on the golf course, great friends, toys any man-child wants and a Fortune 20 Information Security job where I’m continually recognized as a producer. What else could I possibly want?
Before I answer what I want, let me explain my background. I grew up in a standard household where school and a college education was important. After college my brothers and I were taught to get into a job which grows into a lifelong career.
Following this path I graduated and started working in the IT field. I worked through school gaining skills and some experience so when I graduated I was able to get a Network Coordinator position where I built a network for a local university, got bored and moved on. I then worked at a company for 10 years starting as a Systems Administrator and moving through the ranks finally as a Director of IT for my last couple of years. Almost two years ago my company was purchased and due to redundancy I lost my position. Luckily they needed a consultant so I consulted for six months before coming to rest on my current position.
What did I learn? Plenty!
First, while layoffs can make you feel sick to your stomach, especially if you are being laid off they can be a great thing. In my case, I left a stagnant job where looking back I had been bored and unhappy for the previous four years! Four years! At this point I told myself I cannot stay with another company for another 10 years. My most important lesson was that I learned a different lifestyle for those six months… one that suits my work and play habits. It turns out my best work is churned out between 8p-1a and 7a-noon. This leaves the afternoon and early evening to play with family, take a siesta, etc…
Now I’ve been in my current job for nearly a year only to feel the yearning for freedom of schedule and work place. I’m lucky enough to be able to telecommute for a couple days a week but I am still mostly tied to the 9a-4p core hours. I also want work that doesn’t depend on being in a particular place. If I want to work from Panerra Bread or Starbucks or even Grand Cayman, I should be able to! Finally, the work has to be fun and appealing to me.
Several years ago, my padna KJ and I started a website as well as a labor of love called Gizmos for Geeks. While we’re mildly successful we’ve had issues of taking the site and other ideas to the next level. We really have some excellent ideas, but we have limited time to work on Felthos Foundry (our company). Usually, by the time we start working our projects or site we’re exhausted so we run out of steam before really working though our to-dos.
So, back to what I want… It’s simpe really, no fortune and no fame just Freedom!
Untethered Dreams is our quest to untether from corporate life and through our online businesses. This site shares inspirational stories, reviews, how-to advice and results from testing products or different methodologies to gain exposure, site traffic and revenue which hopefully will lead us to Freedom.
